V-Day

Yesterday was February 14th, V-Day. V is for Vagina!
I had my "exam" in the afternoon followed by going home and getting ready for the Vagina Monologues in the evening. I am 29 and that was my first Vagina Monologues. My friend and I attended the performance at OSU, home of the 'Beavers'.
It was Fabulous! I was thrilled to hear all of the differing types of moans associated with a happy vagina! So Funny!
The vagina monologues is all about empowering women and speaking out against the hurt inflicted on women and their bodies. This was their 10th anniversary. It was wonderful to hear how much has been raised for women through this charity over the years. This year the charity is focusing on women hurt by hurricane Katrina.
The one thing that I would have changed about this performance is the birth monologue. They recently added a birth story to the vagina monologues after some people spoke about how birth seemed to be missing from the performance.
Yet after all of these wonderful performances on women empowerment, the birth story seemed to center around something that was inflicted on a woman. They spoke about how a nurses' hand was up in this woman the entire time and about the forceps, as if these were normal procedures.
Yet they did not glorify the mothers journey through this birth, rather the things that happened to her. I felt that this is not what the vagina monologues stand for.
They raved on and on about how a tampon intrudes upon a vagina, but hands and forceps shoved up there for quite some time seemed to be 'what needs to happen' or is excepted as the norm. This left me feeling less empowered and like several women are still not understanding how we can TAKE BACK BIRTH.
All in all I had a great Vagina Day! I had tons of fun centering my day around ME and what I wanted to do.
However, Eve Ensler, creator of the vagina monologues may need our birth stories! Our strong, compelling birth stories of all that we did, not all that was done to us. Help to empower women! Spreading the word on natural, educated birth can also help end violence towards women.
HAPPY V-DAY TO ALL!!!
