Joe the Stickbug

When homeschooling children it is imperative to undertake incredible scientific adventures. For example, bringing hundreds of spider eggs inside in a container to watch them hatch. Another thing one might do is decide to adopt a stickbug. I do not like bugs. I do not enjoy having hundreds of spider eggs in my house at once, nor do I get within ten feet of "Joe" (that would be the stickbug) However, I suffer through these creepy-crawlies for my inquisitive 11 year old.

My daughter goes to visit her dad every other weekend. Imagine my surprise when she walks into her room after being gone 2 full days and asks: "Mom, where's Joe?"
Me: (eyes bugging out, jaw dropping to floor, stammering) "WHAT?!?"
I cautiously look into her room and peer into what SHOULD be Joe's home.

I cautiously back out. "I'm not sure, but you're not coming out of there until you find him."
Five minutes pass before I hear my daughter screaming "MOM" at the top of her lungs. In my head I am already thinking about all the planning that will have to go into a damn stickbug funeral. However I walk into the room to find my daughter pointing, smiling, and exclaiming, "Man, Joe sure is a good climber."

We have SO done the stickbug thing! Rosie had three and they lived a surprisingly long time, until one day she left her bedroom window open and the neighbor sprayed his trees with pesticide. Nice. I personally never touch the creepy things, but I must admit, I do have an appreciation for beasties that feed on blackberry brambles :)

Ah, stickbugs! We started with 3 and ended with over 50. And happily supplied Rosie with her 3.

And, Brandy, you have to touched them!! Remember midwifing the baby that was trying to hatch? lol

My kids still ask when we are going to get more. Thus far the answer has been NEVER!!!

:)

Those are so cool. Not sure I'd want to raise one myself, but wow. And I LOVE the story!
